Okay so I know lots of different people have different opinions about this. I really don't want this to become an argument thread or anything.

On the 15th (Of September) we go to see the vet for Nitro to get shots and to discuss whether or not we are going to have him neutered or not, and if we are, when.

We are not planning on breeding Nitro. However he does have all his papers, we have his whole pedigree, and he is ABCA registered, so If down the road I wanted to, I suppose I could. But I highly doubt we will.

I have read some on neutering, but I want to know what your opinions are on it, and why. I don't know what direction to go with Nitro, and I really don't want to make the wrong decision.

Thank you

So today we took Nitro to our dog park. Now, I know there's a lot of controversy over dog parks, but I love ours. It's actually a trail that goes around a lake and there's two open fields. So it's more like taking the dogs on a walk with other dogs passing occasionally. I love it and we've never had a problem. This may be because it's not very known about and there aren't EVER a ton of people. Anyways, this isn't to cause issues about that. Nitro did wonderful as expected but the exciting part is...

I got him to go into the water. This was an especially big step because of what happened at the lake yesterday.

I went in first and picked him up. (There's this REALLY shallow part of the lake, the highest point was midway up his leg so not deep at all.) We played with his frisbee and ball and he realized that water really is so exciting! At the end, he would follow me no matter where I went or how deep I went (which wasn't deep at all), AND would go in by himself after a ball!

Of course afterwards he decided to go roll in the mud.
jogs: Me
dogs: Lilly, Pacey
weather: warm, humid
music: baroque opera
course: rolling hills 6.8mi

notes:
Before the run I clipped a bunch of blackberry vines growing over the sidewalk. It kind of wore me out (as lame as that sounds). I had a windbreaker on in humid weather and sweated myself silly.

highlights:
The dogs took off at a full sprint from a traffic light 1.5 miles out; that was a rush.
We stopped a few times to sniff bushes. I cooperated, taking a breather, laying on the grass at one point.
Lilly drank more water than usual at the halfway rest stop (two sips instead of one).
I ran out of water 2 miles from home, and regretted that for the whole two miles.
I still got scratched by a blackberry vine, up the road a ways...

Would Bria benefit from adding ground flax seed to her diet? Rich in Omega 3s. I feed it to my horses daily. I just wasn't sure if it would do anything for a dog.

I experienced one of the scariest moments of my life today.

We were all down by the dock, enjoying the sunshine, and the dogs were sunbathing and such. Nitro was walking around just enjoying the sunshine when he misjudged the length of the dock, and fell in the water.

He went under the water and then scariest of all, under the dock. I probably should have remained calm but I started screaming and shrieking. He isn't a super experienced swimmer and I was so terrified of him drowning.

I jumped in, clothed and all, and couldn't see him under the dock. I cannot even begin to find the words to convey just how scared I was when I realized I couldn't see him. I honestly thought he was gone, and that I was never going to see him again.

I'm yelling and screaming and my heart is pounding and then I hear my husband say "here he is!" I'm out of the water and there he is standing there soaking wet looking terrified. So I run to him and pick his soaking little tiny body up and just hold him. (And then toweled him off and told him how sorry I was and that I was so happy he was okay.)

turns out he had swam all the way under the dock and a little ways down the lake and then climbed up on the bank.

He is such a brave boy.

Hi Everyone, hope you have all had a fun labor day weekend. We went camping with 4 of our kids, Nanna and the Green Wonder. I am dirty and a little banged up from the toolbox I fell over in the dark, but we had alot of fun.

Wonder experienced lots and lots of new adventures over the weekend, within seconds of getting to the campsite, he dug in the soot of the fire pit, then he had to prove to a tree that he was tough, he made lots of wood chips for dad to start the campfire with, learned that sleeping bags are really soft and that playing with mommy in the stream only makes the soot turn black, but it was really fun to splash in the water.

He is the dirties I think I have ever seen a dog and I don't think one bath is gonna do it, but he sure was cute!

This is my first Border collie. She is a rescue so she was not socialised as a young puppy - she is getting better. I have researched her problems and found that they are fairly common BC problems but I can't find anything on how to fix those problems.

Problem 1: she herds the people who work on our farm and according to her they each have their own places they must stay and if they venture out of her specified area for them she chases them back eg. the maids are allowed anywhere in the house but if they go outside she chases them back inside, the grooms are allowed by the stables but as soon as they move from their they get chased back, and the gardener just doesn't have any place that he belongs according to Daisy.

We have a few cheeky dogs that just hate the people and they want to kill them whenever they get a chance, Daisy is clearly herding them (which is a problem) unfortunately she sparks off the cheeky dogs and then everything gets a little bit out of control.

Problem 2: She will only do recall if I whistle which is fine except that she comes for specific whistles and no one else in my family can do the "right" whistle. She also won't listen to any voice aids.

Problem 3: She herds the horses, our horses are very used to dogs and are not spooky at them however daisy runs in and out trying to get them to move and when they don't she nips their heels, This makes the horses nevous, first of all this is dangerous to her as they may kick her and it also encourages the other dogs to chase the horses.

She loves to work, unfortunately I don't know what work to give her. Any ideas? She does come to feed the chickens which she considers a job - she keeps them all in tight group, she never bites the chickens.
She also comes with me to feed my chinchillas every night and makes sure that none of the chichillas escape, again she never bites them.
I have tried to teach her tricks to keep her occupied- sit, stay, down, roll over, speak, high five, bang bang(dead), sad, crawl, leave, etc.
She is extremely clever, sometimes I think she is smarter than I am.

So can anyone help me ?

Sorry for the long post

Thanks

We are slightly dog crazy and have 17 dogs thankfully we do live on a farm so they do have lots of space to run (most of them are rescues). So to save you hours of boredem I am only going to introduce my BC.

Her name is Daisy-Mai, she is 10 months old and super clever and slightly crazy. She tries to herd everything - horses, people (farm staff), chickens and cars. She will only respond to whistles and no voice comands. She was not socialised as puppy so she is quite spooky and withdrawn. She has had to learn to play and not be so serious. she learns quickly but is difficult to train as it can be hard to get her to interact with you - but she is improving slowly.

Today Bonnie attended her first herding trial. We watched ducks and cows. Sadly, chose not to stay for sheep as the dogs we wanted to see were running very last. We didn't want to wait another six hours...

Bon was reunited with her sister and a brother, Aub, and also her dad and grandad. I was completely blown away by how like her sire Bonnie is. And the whole clan share a bunch of the same little idiosyncrasies. So Bonnie is not the only one who's weird I suppose, weirdness is in the blood. It was so much fun talking to the other owners. A handler who owns an older dog from this breeder came up to me and greeted Bonnie, and then guessed exactly who her parents were, just by her mannerisms, and of course she's the image of her dad, but with pricked ears. They have the very same expressions. And greeting style. hee hee... Too cool.

Bonnie vs Aub... the puppy showdown

I was really surprised Bonnie would consent to play with a strange dog, but he charmed her very sweetly, and they had a great time together! He thoroughly enjoyed dragging her through the dirt. She was absolutely filthy! Don't feel bad if you can't tell what's going on in these pics. It looks like a pile of black and white limbs to me too. Hint: Aub is green collar/black lead.

Aub gives Bon a good dust bath

After having some fun with her brother and getting snapped at by her sister, Bon made a new friend of a 5 year old little girl. I told the girl that Bonnie will dig on command. She got Bonnie really going, there was a cloud of dust flying over the arena and settling over the spectators because of my puppy. LOL. Bon was tearing up great chunks of grass and sending sand and dirt everywhere, the little girl was just cackling and egging her on, she thought it was fantastic. Then she decided she wanted Bonnie to dig somewhere else so she just picked up her leash and took off with her! ok...says I, and follow meekly behind. She found a sand pit for Bonnie to dig in and some kids had a lot of fun, throwing grass clods and dirt for Bon to chase. Bonnie must have been digging for a half hour. Her tongue and mouth was packed with mud, she had dark circles around her eyes from dust settling in the dampness. One filthy, exhausted dog!

Here she is after a water break, thus the clean black nose and pink mouth. Too bad I didn't take a picture before. This picture just does not do justice to the quantity of dirt in this dog's fur. I gave her a bath when we got home.

We rested at the car and watched duck herding from there. It is not allowed for spectators to get close to the ring, and they had that orange netting up for the fence, made for terrible pictures, but hopefully you'll get the idea....

Here is Bonnie's grandsire, Moose, working the ducks. He's a red smooth. He did a fantastic job but drew awful ducks, they refused to have anything to do with the whole deal. It was frustrating to watch, he's such a nice dog.

Bon's sire, Henry, and his turn on ducks. He is working really well on sheep, this was only his 4th time on ducks. At first he was wishing there was something else around to herd, but then he settled down and turned in a very smooth, nice run. He's not even two years old yet. Great boy!

Hi y'all.

My name is Ásrún, I'm 22 years old and live in Iceland.
I am new to this forum so I hope you'll all welcome me and my little BC mix I choose to call Flækja.

I recieved her just over two weeks ago when a friend called me and asked if I could foster a puppy which had been brought to the animal hospital to be put down.
Of course I couldn't say no but little did I know that just two days later I'd be calling my friend back saying that I would not be fostering the pup but keeping it!

Now I was told that she was 2,5 months old when I got her which would make her around 3 months now but personally I think it's more likely that she's 4 or even 5 months judging by her size and the fact that her puppyteeth are falling out. Not to mention the wonderful fact that she was housetrained when I got her

To quote Mary Poppins she's "practically perfect in everyway". Energetic outside, calm inside, doesn't chew (many) things she shouldn't and like most BC's she is a fast learner
There is however a small problem I am facing. She is very attached to me and finds it hard to be home alone so she whines and cries when I am away. Now I am a student so its never long periods of time she needs to be by herself but she really has to learn this...

anyway enough rambling, here are some photos of my little munchkin
Nitro laid down with me for a nap today up at the lake. I took this opportunity to photograph all his hilarious sleeping positions and his long legs! (He doesn't know what to do with them while sleeping.)

Hi

I'm new to the forums so apologies if this is in the wrong place.

We adopted a one and a half year old border collie yesterday. He's completely lovely and sweetG gets on fine with one of our dogs, and all the other dogs at the rescue centre. But unfortunately our three year old pug is having problems with him. They met before we rescued him, and got on fine. Mostly ignored each other, but we weren't too worried because the pug generally reacts like that to dogs anyway.

Most of the time they're fine, both getting on with their own thing, but a couple of times they've gotten pretty close to coming to blows. It starts with the collie staring usually, and we try to distract them before it can go further, but sometimes there's no build up at all. Just a quick lunge, no growling or lip tightening or anything. Luckily we were able to intervene before they made contact.

Both are unneutered males, could this be part of the problem?

Any suggestions?

So my family owns a cabin up on a lake about 2 hours outside of Anchorage. It was a very influential place in my childhood, and is also the only place where ALL the family gets together.

Anyways, due to the labor day weekend Drex and I came down for the weekend, along with my parents, sister, Aunt, Uncle, and Cousin. Oh and of course the dogs.

This means 5 dogs in a cabin. (This cabin consisting of 5 bedrooms, a remodeled kitchen, leather furniture, etc.) My Aunt and Uncle own a 9 year old bulldog who is very stimulated. I mean he mounts whoever he sees and will not stop unless he is physically pulled off.

I was nervous about Nitro and Him just because Nitro is still overly submissive and pees when meeting another dog.

BUT Nitro is doing awesome! He just wants to play and play with Elvis (the bulldog) and isn't scared of him at all.

He's had two accidents, but I expected this since he's in a new place and doesn't know exactly where to go.

He can go off leash totally amazing, running off into the woods, and coming back IMMEDIATELY when called. I am so proud of my long legged little pup!
