its me or the dog - spaniel
I was just watching an episode of It's me or the dog UK. In which a few Cocker Spaniels were stealing food etc, one of the Cockers (a black cocker) bit the owners kid for food, then later on just mauled the little girl for no reason what so ever. They put the dog to sleep. Now, is only me that thinks that this dog may have suffered from rage syndrome? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rage_syndrome

Should you really prosecute a dog for something that isn't their fault? I mean yes the dog was a danger, but it's something he couldn't control. I dunno... "/ it was quite sad really Sad

Rage syndrome is unpredictable and dangerous aggression. there is no other options IMO. If it truly is RS.

It is however quite rare. (I have not read the link.... remember Wiki can be changed by anyone....)

If that is what it truly was then that was the best option for safety of people, other dogs, and the dog itself.

Ditto what Hannah says on Wikipedia too...it can be changed by anyone out there.

RE: its me or the dog - spaniel
I saw this one too, a while ago, i don't know if you know but others do, i had a lurcher called Bella, she also bit my 4 year old nephew more than once!, the last time she did it they were in the garden and he had a ball, he was not teasing her and she had not had it first, and she went up and just bit him on the lip, once she actually put his arm in her mouth, everyone was always on edge, and we didn't know what to do, then she attacked Holly twice, for no reason she just flipped, Holly didn't try and fight back but Bella did not stop, she could of and would of killed Holly, we could not get her off, my dad had to smack Bella the first time, as there was no other way to stop her, and the second time Holly actually wet herself, she must of been so scared, to of done that, she has only had one accident in a house ever, not counting this one, know all we could think about is what if this had been one of are nephews or anyone or any other dog for that matter, she had snapped at a few family members too, so we phoned the vets and they agreed, Bella had to be put to sleep, she was put to sleep in May, one of the hardest things i have done, she was not quite 4, when you see a dog flip like that it's horrible, she was my first dog too!, she always had issues from the first day i brought her home, my whole family loved her, they did what they had to do, before the dog killed one of there kids, just like i did, it's sad, and heart breaking though.

I think theres medication for Rage Syndrome so it can be treated. But if its the only option then I agree, its just so sad.

Vicky that is a horrible situation to be in and I feel for you completely. Never an easy thing to do Sad

Rage syndrome cannot be 'treated'. There are some medications that can work to suppress the symptoms - but when you are looking at unpredictable aggression it is not worth the risk IMO.

Often the medications take away a lot of what the dog is as well. Not sure why you would want that either. The dogs quality of life has to be the number one priority next to the safety of the people around.

And I speak as someone who has worked with unpredictable aggression and lived with highly people aggressive rescue dogs.
It might be a different view from where I am standing, but there are a lot of things that are worse than death IMO.

Very true! I never thought of the medication changing the dogs personality etc, so yes, to be PTS is probably a better path. Its just such a shame Sad

RE: its me or the dog - spaniel
If it's medical rather then behavioural I see no problem in having the dog put down, ok i'm not saying I would take the decision lightly but unpredictablity has to be the most dangerous type of aggression.

I've owned dogs that have been both dog or people aggressive both have been out of fear and their behaviour has been changed through consistancy and increasing confidence. Putting either of these dogs was never an option as it was within their control.

I feel for that poor spaniel and the family involved.

That's what happens when you get idiot owners who don't train their dogs from the beginning! All of this could have been avoided if the person researched before getting a puppy/dog!! What a shame!

Maybe - or maybe not - rage syndrome is not something you can test for unfortunately.

If they would have done the proper socialization and training from an early age it would have been manageable..

Rage syndrome (if that is what is was) is totally unpredictable and can be directed towards anyone or anything. Its very frightening to see.

It sounds terrifying! They dont even know what they are doing "/ they're eyes go all glazed and then after they're back to normal... It's strange how it mainly happens in spaniels.
