in ground electric fence?
Tucker is 1 year old now & we'd like to be able to have him off leash more often. We have 10 acres and are thinking of installing the underground wire around the entire perimeter and then training him to recognize that boundary. Any thoughts/suggestions? Will he be too smart for the fence? He's very attracted to cars and we're near a highway.

RE: in ground electric fence?
I think BC's are smart enough to realize that they can charge the fence and it'll only hurt for a second. I know an invisible fence wouldn't deter our Tucker or Freckles.

RE: in ground electric fence?
We have a VISIBLE electric fence and my BC will charge it if she is stimulated enough. And yes, she's been shocked by it before, and it is very hot (for cattle) and hurts like heck. I would use an inground fence for barriers within my property (around a garden or pool) or add them to an existing fence to prevent jumping or digging. But I would not trust a dog's life to just the electric with that busy road.

RE: in ground electric fence?
With highly driven dogs I wouldn't recommend an invisible fence. I have heard of dogs running out of the boundaries then not returning because of the shock. It would probably be best to put up regular fencing.

RE: in ground electric fence?
My Uncle uses one of those on his property and he has two quite large dogs.
It works brilliantly. They dont even bother turning it on anymore and I personally tried my heart out to coax them across the line to no avail. |

RE: in ground electric fence?
Border Collies are different and don't normally do well with shock collars. Not to mention I HATE electric fences after one malfunctioned and jolted my friends dog to the point where they thought it caused perment damage. Not worth the risk.

RE: in ground electric fence?
We tried one with Loosie. Before we moved to the house we're at now, we stayed with my mother in law. Her backyard is on a greenbelt, so there is endless land behind it, and Loosie would often wander and not come back for hours. We decided to try the invisible fence. However, when she went beyond the barrier, it shocked her and WOULD NOT stop. She was screaming, I'm frantically trying to get it off of her and it continued to shock her. She hid under the table for 3 hours after we finally got it off.
The moral of the story? I hate them ![]() I would suggest just a regular fence if that's possible. ![]() ~Ali |

RE: in ground electric fence?
As far as I know all electric shock devices for dogs are banned in the UK I think for good reason nothing replaces proper responsible training and a common sense approach to off lead play and training time

RE: in ground electric fence?
To those who are having a shot at me..............I did not make any comments about my personal thoughts on electric fences.
I simply stated facts. I notice a lot of people here talk about subjects when they really dont know what they are talking about. Would I use one for my dogs? NO. They know and respect the boundaries set by me. Would I recomend one to someone else? I would neither recomend nor say no as its up to the individuial to make there decision based on facts and not feelings, and also need to consider there own individual situation. |

I don't recall shots taken at you? My own mother uses one and I have the same opinion on the matter.

I'm not taking a shot(s) at you by any means. If anything I'll say I'm taking a shot at your uncle who uses the electric fence. The bottom line is if a person does not have the time to train the dog nor want to put in the effort, well, then maybe a dog isn't the best pet for said person. Border Collies do not fare well with harsh training procedures and need a more involved and reward based approach.

RE: in ground electric fence?
I taught my dogs recall with a whistle and treats
I must agree though that positive training is best for a sensitive breed like Bc:s
