Why do some people have dogs ?
I see rather often an older man who owns a german shepard. This poor dog looks young and is seriously under weight and completely out of control Sad He walks the dog on a flex and the dog attempts to jump up at cars that pass.. he doesn't even try to prevent this action Icon_evil He lives near my mum and my mother has a young 3yr old german shepard. Apparently one day my mum had got her dog in to the back of the car and this man came out with his dog. The dog jumped up on to my mothers car scratching the paint work. My poor mother seems to be a bit scared of this man and she didn't say anything but if I ever see this happen I will have the police on the matter. I think it's terrible that so many people take on dogs and can't be bothered to train them the basics of obedience. That poor dog deserves a proper home..Eusa_think

RE: Why do some people have dogs ?
IMO, there are many people who should not own a dog.

RE: Why do some people have dogs ?
unfortunatly not everyone appreciates how owning a well behaved trained dog even in just basic obedience is so much more pleasurable and rewarding than wrestling with one every time it is taken out, dealing with complaints or paying for repairs. Like Linda says some people just shouldn't be allowed to own a dog.

RE: Why do some people have dogs ?
Some people would be challenged by pet rocks I swear...

So this is maybe not an extreme example, but have you noticed that some people who are walking a dog, when they see you walking your dog, insist on letting their dog drag them over so it can 'meet' yours? This happens to me all the time!!

Bonnie was terrified of other dogs when she was younger (still doesn't enjoy them yet, but at least not reactive anymore). Once I was walking Bon though a shopping area and a lady had her dog on a Flexi, she saw Bon and started coming towards us, didn't say anything or even look at me, and her dog is just pulling all the line out of the flexi coming right for my dog. I put Bonnie on the other side of me and managed to get a flower bed between us. I didn't say anything but the woman looked kinda miffed. And then later, same day, my husband was holding Bonnie's leash while I looked at things at a market, two different people with large dogs (malinois and standard poodle) came up at the same time to let their dogs 'meet' Bonnie. I turn around and my poor 15 lb pup has her head buried in my hubby's lap while these two 70 lb dogs loom over the top of her sniffing her over. Is it not obvious to you that she isn't having fun there?! They were both nice, well-meaning people and drug the dogs off immediately when I told them she was scared of other dogs, but come on? You own a dog and you can't read dogs???

Oh and the best one? When Bon was really little we had stopped at a little side of the road restaurant to eat, sitting outside on benches enjoying our food with Bon on leash under the table. Someone crosses the road with an off-leash dog and comes right over to talk to us. The dog isn't really minding him and the owner keeps yelling its name really loud. It looked like a chow/akita cross or maybe chow/husky. I repeatedly told him not to bring the dog over (as he's coming closer and closer), then finally told him my dog was scared of other dogs, to which he responds as if he were invited to help or something. "Oh, my dog is great with other dogs!" and meanwhile his dog is trying to get under the table to see my puppy who is pressed against my legs, shaking and snarling. I put my boot into the dog's neck and tried to shove it away gently, to which the guy says "Don't kick him, he'll bite you". Good grief, get this dog away from me! I finally managed to pick up Bon, whose leash was tangled around me, the bench, and the other dog by this point, and had to elbow away Cujo for a few more minutes before the guy finally got the hint and left.

I appreciate that all these dog owners obviously liked dogs and their animals were well fed and all that, but gosh most people don't seem to have even the first clue about dog behavior. And that can lead to a whole lot of trouble!

At least people don't tend to try to introduce their dogs to my Akita, however, he's actually very dog-friendly so it wouldn't matter if they did.

oh poor Bonnie no wonder she was scared of other dogs. Why dont folk just think or at least ask if there dog can be introduced better still just keep walking.

RE: Why do some people have dogs ?
Theres a couple that live across the road from me who have a Border collie, and it NEVER gets out walks. I think ive seen them take it out like twice the whole time since they moved here. I know its their dog too because you can hear it barking in their back garden (gardens in our block arent big btw!) and it has escaped a few times...once i had my dog in the car and when it seen her it bolted over and was up on the car looking thru the window, its really underweight looking aswell, i feel so sorry for it. It pisses me off that some people dont research dog breeds before they buy them...if your going to get a dog that never gets out then why get a border collie the most active!?? Grrr...why get a dog at all...some people! >.<

RE: Why do some people have dogs ?
My brother in law's family are the sorts that should not own dogs. They are nearly as bad as it gets. They currently own a pitbull that they keep out in their tiny yard. It get's no socialization and rarely any attention at all. They feed it crap dog food and it's always out of water when I've seen it. It totally flipped out on me when I went back there and gave it water. It obviously was starving for attention and scratched the heck out of me jumping all over me.

RE: Why do some people have dogs ?
Green LOVES other dogs and he wants to play with every dog he sees but I don't let him approach other dogs (or children, or people) unless the owner (person, parent) says it is ok. But I had someone set their aggressive dogs on Green when we were walking and once outside my yard! Needless to say they are not neighbors I will ever be friends with.

Oh the stupidity of people! there should be licenses that people have to take before owning a dog, as well as before they have children.

RE: Why do some people have dogs ?
I hate it when people come rushing up to you with their kid or dog without asking. Nevermind the fact that your dog may not be friendly and it really pisses me off because Maggie is not kid friendly when she doesn't know them. If someone pushes their kid ( and they usually do ) towards Maggie, "Go pet the doggie!" and the kid runs over and starts mauling my dog who is afraid of kids and reactive towards them, am I going to be on the hook when their kid gets nipped? As far as I'm concerned they should be because they never asked for permission. And to all those people who say that a dog should be mozzled, I can't help but feel that if the person hadn't of invited themselves to pet my nervous dog, then she wouldn't need a muzzle. Don't get me wrong, she's good with other dogs and only wants to play, and she LOVES adult strangers, but because of her experience with cruel children, she's scared and reacts.. which should make it fun when I get pregnant.. oui!

I have a good example of dog owners. At the cattledog trial that my wife and I attended 2 weeks ago, there was not one dog that approached us without asking! Yaaay BC owners!
