The great glass jar escapade!
We have started having to lock the dogs out of the kitchen when we go out. Loki can now reach all three shelves on the dresser. We came home from university on Thursday to find:

Two now empty boxes of Weetabix
One shredded carton of cocoa powder, the contents scattered across the kitchen floor, living room floor, and sofa
Three neatly opened glass jars (honey, golden syrup and peanut butter, respectively) all now empty
The packaging from a bag of apples
Six badly bruised mandarin oranges

And a very sticky young collie!Speechless-smiley-003 He was also very hyper - guess who had the golden syrup and the Weetabix? In between him pooping and bouncing, I managed to bath him. Shadow, meanwhile, was feeling very sorry for herself - she was rather constipated; I think it was her who had the peanut butter. Probably also her who figured out how to open the jars... Anyhow, Loki was basically a lunatic for the next day and a half. I managed to walk it out of his system in the end. Shadow had to have a laxative but has made a 100% recovery. Abbie either didn't eat anything or is a typical Labrador and able to digest whatever she swallows. Seriously, she ate part of an interior wall as a puppy with no ill effects!

They can open jars now. Just let that sink in. I have trouble with jars - and I have opposable thumbs!
We are doomed...

Yes, coming in and seeing the cocoa scattered everywhere scared the heck out of me! Thankfully, they hadn't eaten any of it.

That is a funny story, atleast for those of us who didn't have to clean up the mess and deal with the zoomies! Smile LOL. Made me laugh out loud!

Although a funny story it could also become very costly.

Is Loki crate trained? It doesn't sound like he should be able to roam the house when you aren't home to watch him.
He could really harm himself or the other dogs with his antics.

RE: The great glass jar escapade!
He is safely confined to the living room now. I have Loki proofed it. The cats would torture him if I left him in a crate. The last time I tried that, one of them sprayed him through the wire! So our living room now is very minimalist - and much easier to keep tidy, if I do say so myself.

OH has promised to fit doors to the dresser so that they can't get at the contents. Until then, we are relying on a dog gate. In fairness, Loki has never raided the kitchen before. So I have also increased the amount of food he gets in case he was actually hungry. It's hard to tell with Loki - he has a really hearty appetite and yet is very lean built.

I rarely leave him at home anyway. University doesn't allow dogs on campus sadly. He goes most places with me. He is very good at charming female sales assistants into making a fuss of him - girl at pet shop was utterly smitten. We were waiting to be served and Loki sat down and did the "Lassie" whine. He ignores men completely.

hahaha jeepers, sure sounds like a wonderful homecoming. But I'm glad they're all fine.
I might ask to borrow them from time to time to open a few jars Big Grin

After reading this thread before bed last night... I had a dream that Tucker opened alllllllllllllllllllll the peaches/apricots that we canned over the summer (about 15 dozen) and BennE ate them ALL.

I must remember not to open jars in front of him

RE: The great glass jar escapade!
Nightmare! The worst Fergus has ever done is ripped kitchen paper into shreds when we were out, it looked like it had snowed inside.

A friend of mine has an English Pointer named Ben. Both Ben and his Retriever buddy April have free run of the farm in the daytime if the owners are at home. A couple of years back they started noticing the milk was being delivered but by the time they brought it inside one bottle would be empty. For weeks this went on and they couldn't figure out what was happening, there was never ever a drop of milk around the bottles and they were also still in the bottle holder by the door. They decided they'd watch after the milk was delivered so one morning my friend just sat and watched from inside until they realised Ben was walking along, picking ever so delicately the foil cap off the milk, picking the bottle up in his mouth tipping it perfectly so every bit of milk would go in his mouth. He'd swallow every drop and replace the bottle in it's rightful place. Needless to say the milkman was asked to put the milk on a shelf high up out of the way after they realised. Thankfully Ben never had any reaction to the milk as I know dogs are often intolerant to milk. You'd never of thought it was him if you met this dog, theres very few brain cells in that dogs head!!!

Wow. That is pretty crazy! glad they're alright. Lance and Mick have never done anything like that but they're always in their crates if I'm gone. The worst food incident we've had was when I made spaghetti and made myself a huge plate of it (I love spaghetti) and I went to the counter to poor a drink. By the time I noticed Mick had eaten ALL of it and was cleaning the plate.

Hope the dog gate works. I know it wouldn't work with mine. Not if they really wanted over. They'd clear it without any effort.

Loki and Shadow could jump it no problem, but they respect it.
Abbie sometimes shoulders it out of her way...part rhino!
