Taste Of The Wild Feeders!
How much do you feed your dogs?
Emma and Nanuq are getting 1 cup twice a day and Esme is getting 3/4 cup twice a day. I know I talked to someone on here who is feeding TOTW and it seems like they were feeding less. Emma and Nanuq are pretty active now that Esme came so their feeling more bony! I picked up some chicken legs yesterday at walmart they were on sale, so I will be feeding those along with the TOTW. Any suggestions

RE: Taste Of The Wild Feeders!
I feed TOTW and went from Pacific Stream to Sierra MT(less kcals) so it would be easier to take some weight off. I went from feeding between 2/3 and 3/4 cup twice a day to about 1/2 cup twice a day.
Now that they have lost all the weight they needed to we will be going back to Pacific Stream and I will be feeding about 1 1/4 cup daily split between the two meals. More or less will be added dependent on their weight. Linda One Border Collie Is Never Enough |

RE: Taste Of The Wild Feeders!
I don't feed Holly this, i've no idea how much 1 cup is, but i give Holly 80 grams a day twice a day, she has Burns, and this is the most she can have, (i think!) well so the bag said's, i like her weight right know, if she puts on a little more i'm ok with that too.

RE: Taste Of The Wild Feeders!
I did get a bag of TOTW when I went camping for 10 days this summer (I normally feed raw, but not enough room in the caravan fridge to keep enough food for 4 dogs for 10 days), I think I gave them a cup each twice a day, it would have been what they said on the bag, I got them the High Praire, we probably haven't got the variety over here anyway, I only know of 1 place to get it.

RE: Taste Of The Wild Feeders!
I dont feed TOTW, but I give Enzo about 1 cup, twice a day. And he seems to maintain his weight pretty well. One of my kitties is on TOTW and gets 1/4 cup and is maintaining his weight nicely.

RE: Taste Of The Wild Feeders!
I've been feeding Mick 2 cups a day, and Lance 1 and a half. Might up Lance's a little in the late Spring/Summer because he loses weight during those months because we're more active. He got pretty skinny pretty fast last summer. Now he's back to what I think is his ideal weight.

RE: Taste Of The Wild Feeders!
I feed mine TOTW but I don't measure the amount to know exactly...my best guess would be that Izzy is getting around 2 cups a day or just a tad more; Kaya (because of her age and small decrease in appetite in the last year) gets a bit less, roughly 1-1/2 cups a day.

RE: Taste Of The Wild Feeders!
I want to re open this thread as I have a similar question - I'm currently switching Finn from Horizon Complete Legacy to TOTW - I am not 100% which "brand" I got the "fowl" flavoured one and I also picked up a couple cans of wet food, the same flavour. The bag says for his age and weight to feed like 2-3 cups or more a day (shouldn't be posting this until I go home and look to be certain but oh well) and the current food he's on says 1 2/3 a day - does he really need 2-3+ cups of TOTW a DAY???
A week or so ago I started to cut his food back I was giving him 3/4 cup twice a day because he was TOO skinny but then with that plus all the treats he was packing on the weight quick so I lowered it to 1/2 cup twice a day. Now this new food is telling me 2-3 cups a day and I'm not sure what to do.... I am also mixing a teaspoon or so of the wet food in it for flavour and moisture. He's adjusting really well to the new food and we will be on only TOTW here pretty soon so I'm wondering if I should stick to the 1/2 twice a day plus tsp of wet food and wait and see what happens or am I basically starving my dog?? LOL ah! I just don't know! and he's been going and licking his empty bowl periodically and I just don't know if it's because the wet food residue or if he's hungry. He's not acting any different other than that and he's not skin and bones or anything but I don't want to starve my dog and I don't want to over feed him either. But if I have to feed him 3 cups of that food a day well it's not going to last very long at all and I might have to reconsider my decision! Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and Finn is 5.5 months old and roughly around 30 lbs if that helps... - Katrina and Finnigan

RE: Taste Of The Wild Feeders!
I have just gone back to Pacific Stream TOTW since the girls are at their goal weight. Different "flavors" of TOTW have different kcals and protein amounts.
I am only feeding my 6 and 7 year olds 1/2 to 3/4 cup twice a day and they weigh 35 pounds each. The best way to judge until you get used to feeding TOTW is to start with what you were feeding and increase or decrease as needed by the feel of the dog. It won't take long before you find the right amount to feed. Why do you feed the canned food with the kibble? If you are training more and using treats you can use the kibble instead of treats, much less fat. Linda One Border Collie Is Never Enough |

Thanks - I just am scared that I don't know what to "look for" in the dog to know if he's the appropriate size or not but I'm sure I'd know if he was too skinny or what not. I mixed a little bit of the wet just to entice him a bit more - after Christmas I cooked a turkey dinner and added some turkey into his kibble as an added bonus and it really screwed up his feedings. If I could go back I would not do it. I struggled with taking his food away from him but I DID it and he STILL Wasn't all that interested in it and this was around the time when I was trying to up his food to put some weight on him so I panicked and added things to his food to get him to eat a full meal. Up until yesterday, even with the wet he wasn't completing a full dish of 1/2 cup of kibble. I dunno why! Should I stop mixing in the wet? I've also tried to use Kibble as treats and it works to a certain extent. Right now on leash training outside I have to use cheese, even the boiled chicken he lost interest in I'm tellin you he's a pretty stubborn little fella. I took a bag of kibble to our agility class on Friday, it lasted about 5 minutes before he didn't want anything to do with it anymore. I try and use healthy-ish treats but that's why I cut back the kibble was to make room for the treats. God I don't know I'm starting to feel overwhelmed,

RE: Taste Of The Wild Feeders!
Multiple types of treats are often needed during training sessions, but kibble like you found out works for a while.
"IMO" it isn't necessary to add canned food to the kibble. He will eat when he is hungry. You said you have been doing a lot of training with treats, could that be why he isn't eating with vigor? Don't let it get to you. He will eat, he will not starve himself. He should have a waist and you should be able to feel his ribs. Linda One Border Collie Is Never Enough |
