OMG I have just been reading some of the stories here and getting a tad upset!
I am new to pet keeping, and I didn't actually ever think about rescue dogs, nor did I think for a second that healthy ones would be killed if nobody adopted them! How thick am I? I wish I had a bigger house.

RE: Stories
Oh don't feel bad.....you are not the only one.
That is why I feel it is so important we try to share the information. Now you know and that is a good thing!

I am pretty damn sure that in Scotland they don't put dogs to sleep if they are healthy or have issues. Obviously dogs trust is the one everyone knows & SSPCA doesn't put them to sleep either. The only other rescue centre I know of is the Edinburgh dog & cat home & I hope they don't do it either so no need to feel guilty! I'd love to rescue a dog (:

RE: Stories
Oh, thats a relief then. How awful though. And people still carry on letting their dogs get pregnant.

This is why some of us strongly urge getting your dog spayed/neutered. Here in States it is horrible for dogs and cats. Seems the majority of people in this country (though it is the youngest large country), don't seem to take responsibility or pride in what they have. Things here are on an, if it feels good do it or get it, then when you are done with it through it away, abandon it, divorce it, dump it, destroy it, kick it to the curb. ![]() Rayeann Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be. -Temple Grandin |

RE: Stories
When I was 13 I took an 11 day tour of Europe. We saw London, France, and Scotland (loved Scotland!) and I was amazed at the dogs walking down sidewalks and sitting at restaurants. I wish it was like that here. I take my dogs a lot more places than the average dog owner but still there are so many places they are not welcome. It is sad. Maybe I can understand someone not wanting to eat next to my dog but what really gets me is that dogs are not allowed at the Guadalupe Mountains National Park which happens to be the closest place to me to go hiking!
"Can I take my dog hiking with me? No, pets are not allowed on hiking trails or in the backcountry. The closest kennel service (limited hours) is at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. They may be walked on the paved section of the Pinery Loop directly behind the Visitor's Center." WHY??? growl Ok, I'm done ranting. ![]() "Red Raider" Born July 6, 2011 Rescued October 29, 2011 |

RE: Stories
I am the same way Stephanie, Silky goes everywhere with me. We do have a lot of places to take her though, most places she should be on a leash, but since we go in the winter we don't run into many other people in the parks or on the trails, I will let her off and we run into a lot of others who do the same.

RE: Stories
Rescues in England will not put a healthy dog down... HOWEVER after watching a documentary a few years ago English rescues are not as fluffy as they sound.
In healthy they count 'mental' health as well. Many centres will put down a dog that is aggressive, be that towards dogs, humans etc. Many classify these dogs are sick and not just misunderstood, they handle so many dogs each year that the 'bad' ones don't often get a chance to show their good side before they are PTS. This isn't all rescues it's not all bad... I've recently rescued a Spaniel from an independant rescue and they openly, some might say too openly advertise the dogs as 'aggressive' or 'protective' etc. This however did not put my off of Dewi as his behaviour was situational and being removed from the foster home he was in the behaviour has not been seen for over a month (he's only been here three months). |

RE: Stories
In Icelands there are no rescues.
There is however a group that was formed about two years ago which people who need to get rid of their animals can contact, and there they have a list of people who are willing to foster and find new homes. It would be interesting if one could get their hands on the numbers of healthy pups and dogs PTS simply because the owners are unable or can't be bothered to take care of their dogs anymore. I also hate it when people post ads saying that if no one can collect the dog/pup in two days it will be PTS... seriously? It's not a kill shelter you are running but a home, you took the responsibility of a life when getting the dog at least show it the respect of finding it a loving home since you are unable to provide one..... - of course there is some percentage where it is the case that people might be moving or children have extreme allergies or something urgent came up, but in about 60% of these ads I feel certain it's just a threat to get someone to take the dog asap. hmmm sorry about the rant this turned into, these kinds of people just piss me off!
