Grizzly Man
I just heard about and finished watching 'Grizzly Man' , a documentary about Tim Treadwell and his life with the bears of Alaska
He was killed by one of the bears he loved so much , along with his partner Amie Huguenard in October 2003 While he undoubtably shot some amazing footage of the bears and foxes , I believe he was mentally unstable and did more harm than good to the bears he professed to love I found this comment from someone who said they were a biologist studying the damage he did to the bears Since his 2003 death, 7 of the 12 bears that he interacted with, who were being monitored by a legitimate scientific study, have died. 2 starved during the winter of 2004, having become so dependant on Treadwell for help gathering the required sustenance they needed they went into hibernation ill prepared and died in their dens. 3, including the bear the Treadwell referred to as "Mr. Chocolate" had to be put down by park rangers, a danger to themselves and visitors thanks to Treadwell removing their natural fear of man. 2 were killed by hunters having wandered outside of the sanctuary, in both cases the hunters reported that the bear walked right up to them. How true that is I dont know , but I do think anyone who claims to love the wild shouldnt push themselves into it and interfere with the natural order of things the way he did ![]() Buddy April 1st 1993 - April 8th 2008 Run free my sweet Ambereyes Always missed |

RE: Grizzly Man
I agree, this was a tragedy waiting to happen, both for him and the bears as well. Very sad.

RE: Grizzly Man
I watched a few episodes of The Grizzly Man. IMO, the guy was more than a little off.
Why he was allowed to interact with the bears I have no idea but it was wrong. The program made money for all the wrong reasons. If the bears did in fact die because of this series then the people responsible for the show should be held accountable. Linda One Border Collie Is Never Enough |

RE: Grizzly Man
I watched the first episode, he's definitely not right. :S
Reminds me of a similar program I watched about a man called Charlie Vandergaw... called 'stranger among bears'. He was living in a cabin with bears all around, feeding them and trying to 'tame' them. I think he got a hefty fine for it in the end... ![]() |

RE: Grizzly Man
I saw this, and agree, he was definitely unstable. Hadn't heard the outcome of the bears, but whether or not he was to blame (and I suspect he was at least in part), it's very sad all around.

RE: Grizzly Man
I never watched it, those poor bears, i don't know why people try and tame wild animals anyway, when they live in the wild they should be left alone.

RE: Grizzly Man
I've seen the documentary. The series was basically the footage in the documentary but split into episodes with some other stuff added. I don't think it was a planned thing until after his death.
I remember my old boss, who is a wildlife specialist, went and saw it with her husband at the theater. She came back and said he was a crazy fool. That's pretty much what I got from it as well. He definitely had some issues. And was doing more harm than anything. Brandon Lance & Mick ![]() "Don't think of it as a problem. Think of it as an opportunity for a solution!" |

RE: Grizzly Man
I believe not too long after his death there were quite a few accusations of drug use and such. The man was definately off his rocker and so was his girlfriend for going out there with him. It is very sad and detrimental to the animals that suffered due to him and his idiocy.

RE: Grizzly Man
Wild animals are just that, wild in my book. The only interference us humans should give is if we've affected their environment or injured them by accident.
I have seen the documentary but a long time ago and cannot remember it exactly but it shouldn't have been allowed to happen! - Morwenna and Fergus ![]() 'One of the seven great dogs' |
