Going Collar Crazy HeRe! Best Collar For Collies?
So I brought my Pepper with me today on a trip to Fargo to get all fancied up! and to get her a new collar. Then I found myself a ZoMbIe staring at a wall of collars not knowing what to get! I asked one employee what would be the best collar for my Border Collie? I got the response... well Kong's are indestructible, and thats all she had. Then I found another employee passing by and asked her... She said... well its really personal preference, then I tried to not be rude in my quick response when I said well...the problem with that is...I'm now the one going to wear the collar, but thanks for your input. Longer story shorter! I bought her a rolled leather, i figured that was best since she has long hair on her neck.

So I throw the ball in your courts... What do you wrap your collies in? If a wrapping is what you do!

I had to get Green a martingale collar because he was always able to back out of every collar and harness I have ever put on him. He always wore a green collar but the only ones we could find were girly or black with skull and crossbones. Not only is it not green but he is not a skull and crossbones kind of guy at all.

My dogs change collars a lot because i'm a collar fanatic. They don't usually wear them around the house though bc I can't stand to hear tags jingling. Todd rarely wears one. Fury wears a cute flame one out and about but he wears a plain green or blue one with metal buckles when we go herdign bc he breaks them in excitement.

I only have one collar. Athena hardly ever wears her collar unless we go somewhere. Smile I am addicted to slip leads though! Tongue

Fury and Bryn got new ones this week Smile Fury got orange/yellow flames and Bryn got blue flames. Singe already has purple flames. I am totally in love with slip leads also. They're so easy to use! Smile And they come in tons of colors/fabrics too!

I too am in the club of many different collars.

I have rolled and flat leather, flat snap, martingale, and more. IMO one doesn't work better for "my" girls than the other.
Leather can be an issue if it gets wet but other than that it's durable.

I just use a flat buckle collar and a sensation harness. Where do you ladies get those slip collars?

I just got Izzy a new collar last weekend as he (once again) outgrew his. This is his 4th - and final - switch up; I'd had just regular flat leather collars on him, but this time I purchased a rolled leather collar. Actually I'd wanted to get him one for a while, but the store near my house didn't carry them. They finally brought in a shipment and that's what I got. Must say I like it more than the old collars because it doesn't flatten his fur the way the regular collars do.

The martingale?

You can find them just about anywhere. Here is a site that has many patterns although a little more costly than the plain ones.

The thing I love about the Lupine ones is the guarantee - they will replace if anything happens to it Smile

At the moment both my boys are wearing flat leather collars, I prefer rolled leather however as it doesn't flatten their fur as much. As they have constant access to an outside area they always wear collars as it is illegal for a dog to be without a collar and tag while outside in the UK.

RE: Going Collar Crazy HeRe! Best Collar For Collies?
I AM SO SHOWING MY GRANDMOTHER THIS THREAD!!!! She nags me all the time because I can't go to Petsmart or the feed store (they have handmade leather collars that are one of a kind) without buying one!!!

Raider so far started with a martingale collar because I was afraid his pointly lil head would slip anything else but the closing sensation frightened him. Sigh. He's an odd duck compared to the breeds I'm used to. Next we got just a 3/8 black buckle collar and paired it with a small black harness for walking. I would couple them together so if I corrected him he would feel some correction on the collar but not enough to scare him after being traumatized by the martingale. (I love martingale collars again my kid is an odd duck) Eventually we switched to just the buckle collar and he's done great. He out grew it though and since he is 6 months now I figure he will start collecting his adult collars now. We have a 3/8 flat leather collar no now with a buckle. He can slip even though it's in the tightest hole (a little growing room) but he doesn't. He walks great now. He starts an agility class this coming saturday though and she says they need a buckle or snap collar. Since he can slip his current one and he might be a little intimidated by the class I'm making a trip to Petsmart today or tomorrow to buy an adjustable snap collar since it can be adjust down for a perfect fit. I've already got my eye on this really cute light blue on blue with doggy designs that would look really cute with his pretty red hair. I prefer leather collars though because the clean up so much easier and seems like they don't get to smelling as bad as the nylon ones. The sunglow collars are cool that is the plastic coated nylon and when he is big enough he will get one of those in a pretty color with a reflective strip and o-ring. I love the o-rings! But I prefer it to have both an o and d that way I can hang the tags from the d-ring and connect the leash to the o-ring. Most of those only come in 1" wide and he's just not quite big enough for that yet.

My pit has even more collars in her closet :-) She has a double ply 2" wide leather protection collar with spikes for when we hike. I've always worried if we came across something bigger than her so she doesn't go out in the hills without it. She's got a choker too. It's her working collar and the one that holds her rabies tag. She knows when we put it on I'm going to ask her to do something important but around the house she just wears and adjustable nylon snap collar that is pink/black/white polk-a-dots and only 3/8" wide. She's just my widdle piddle girl.

Socks only has one collar, two if you count her old dirty one she wore when I first met her and brought her home.

This is basically the only picture where her collar is visible. I don't really like seeing bright colors on her! Doesn't really seem her type. Buddy however has a red collar. Both collars are homemade and they work wonderful.
