Flax Seed

This is more curiosity than anything. Which is safe here, because it only killed the cat.

Would Bria benefit from adding ground flax seed to her diet? Rich in Omega 3s. I feed it to my horses daily. I just wasn't sure if it would do anything for a dog.

I cannot find anything that has indicated that this is detrimental to dogs. From what I've read online the effects are especially helpful for keeping skin and coat healthy as well as some immune system support and some anti-inflammatory effects. The dosage however seems to be of some debate. I would consult a vet for that info.

If you are looking for an omega 3 rich supplement, flax seed oil isn't advised. Fish oil is a better option. The omega 3 in flax seed oil is ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), which they convert into into DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). The problem is, they're not very efficient at converting it, so we end up only being able to use about 10% of what we take in. Fish oil, on the other hand, is pre-converted (by the fish!) into EPA and DHA, so you can absorb almost all of it.

Other than that, it's not at all dangerous.

Well, I wasn't going to use flax seed oil, just ground flax. But that's good to know.
