First day of school
I love my job very much but I hate the first day of school. It is like starting all over as though they have never been in school and don't know any rules or procedures. They are in fourth grade and the entire school has the exact same rules and behavior program. So why oh why do they behave as though they have never been in school before?

RE: First day of school
I think all teachers dread that first few days back after the summer holidays, new classes for the kids all the catching up on what they did seems the last thing of interest is learning. If its any consolation its the same in my classes and I teach adults Icon_neutral

RE: First day of school
Kids here just started to. My sister has two kids, one in preschool and one in kindergarten. She's also in college herself and will be drops off Ozzy at 6 am. I rescheduled work to watch her pup! he's fun though and I'm happy she's going back to school. My oldest nephew.... I don't know how his teacher can stand him lol. He's too smart for his age and a smart ass. This is the nephew who was held back because he was addicted to World of Warcraft. He's a smart kid and knows it. I got some pics of his first day and man, he looked nervous.

Kelly I wish you the best this year. I wish my nephew had you as a teacher Smile Good luck!

RE: First day of school
Awwh thanks Brandon! I would love to have your nephew! We spent the day yesterday doing all the first day stuff. Then they made time capsules of all their favorites and what they wanted to learn in 4th grade and what they are nervous about and stuf like that. I ordered about me posters for them to fill in. I thought they would like it but they didn't care to do it. They did bare minimum to get finished and talk. I have a feeling that is going to be my year. It seems every year they want to do less. There is very little work ethic or pride to do a good job. That makes me sad and it is hard to build up when they don't learn it at home.
Ok. I'm finished ranting now. If only math was as easy to learn as "get the orange ball Green".

Kelly- been there, felt that! It used to take me till the Oct holiday to feel that they were my class, then I became their fierce protector.
Aw....I bet they just wanted to chat, and catch up with all the summer's news.....Any better today?

Quote:There is very little work ethic or pride to do a good job

Sadly, this describes my son. He's 20 now, though, and it makes me crazy--especially since everything comes so easy for him! We've had many, many, many arguments about this. My daughter (17), on the other hand, goes out of her way to do a good job, but has to struggle for a lot of things. She's never discouraged, though, so yay for her!

Unfortunately, I also see this so much at work I want to hurt people. My supervisor, during one of my reviews, "dinged me" (and gave me a lower score--which affected my raise) while actually telling me I should lower my standards as not everyone has the same work ethic as I do, and my expectations of them consistently doing the job right the first time were unreasonable!

I felt the same way first week of fall semester at college. All the freshmen milling around and being dumb.

RE: First day of school
It's funny that you mention work ethic as I was discussing it on another forum just a couple days ago. People seem to be of the mind that young people these days have far less work ethic than in the past. I tend to agree from what I've seen and who I've worked for. In fact I got my first job at a ranch because the old ranch hand just stopped showing up. Which is crazy cause there's so much work that HAS to get done daily on a ranch. Working there taught me good work ethic (well.. it was pounded into me by my boss lol). I matured a lot on that job.

Michelle - There are people who could straighten your son out. He must have something going for him though if things come easy in his life. But easy makes people lazy.

RE: First day of school
When I first had my son I gave up nursing and worked in a school and absolutely LOVED it, I loved working with the kids. Sometimes I would think about re-training as a teacher and to be quite honest if I had my time over again I think I may have gone into teaching.

Jo.

This is very true. I know things will get better as the year goes on. I am just exhausted now.
