Fine in every way but doesnt want to play
My 3 year old border collie girl Gypsy is fit and well , eating her meals just fine and her bowel movements are normal , she is enjoying her walks and she is as cuddly and affectionate as she normally is , seems happy and shows no signs of discomfort at all ..... but for the last five days she hasn't shown any interest in playing with her toys or my other two dogs , which for her is highly unusual

I took her along to my vets for a once over and he said she is in perfect condition and could give no reason why she has suddenly gone off playing with Toffee and Teddy or bothering to play with me and her toys ... if I try to get her to play she just lies down and looks at me as if im insane ... and she just ignores all overtures by the other two to play either in the house , in the garden or on walks

Any ideas guys , cos im stumped ?

Could something have happened in the garden that's scared her? :/

Is she spayed? I'm just throwing anything I can think of out there! Maybe shes got some hormone issue? I could be completely off the ball here.

Have you taken her out into the garden on her own to see if it's around the others or just in general?

I'm stumped too. Did the vet not suggest anything?

Yep , she was spayed after her first season

She isnt afraid of going anywhere on her own or with the others , her behaviour is totally normal apart from the playing issue
The vet just said to keep an eye on her and if I had any other worries to get in touch , but as far as he was concerned she was a healthy , happy dog

someone suggested that it could be as simple a thing that as she is now three years old she could just be maturing

Well I said 5 days ago because thats when I noticed it , but its possible that she has been 'shunning' the boys when they asked her to play earlier than that and I just wasnt in the room to see it happen

You might be right then. If the vet says she's healthy i'd just keep an eye on her and see how she goes. Maybe she's just choosing to be the mature one of the pack Wink Someone's gotta do it!

RE: Fine in every way but doesnt want to play
This happened with our choc lab/husky cross. He was.. oh 4 or 5? I think but he went from super high energy (bouncing off the walls and furniture, etc etc) to calm and quiet. LOL I think that's partly why we got our second dog- and that did get him playing more, but nothing like he had been as a younger dog. For him it was just maturity. He was still as eager as ever but didn't want endless ball and stick throwing, didn't feel the need to constantly be on the move, and just generally was happy doing what we were doing without extra stuff.

Then again, he was still a goofball. At 8 or 9 our 75lb dog climbed into a rain-filled TINY red-rider wagon and tried to lay in the water.... Yikes

I think some one on one time with her will help her out of the funk she is in. Give her a girls day out, take her somewhere special and pack a couple of her toys, treats, a meal and water, better yet, stop and get her a new toy and treat. Sounds like your girl is bored with the same old stuff, and needs a surprise. Maybe take her to meet up with someone from the forum, she will have big stories to tell when she gets home.
