Brandon if I post this in the wrong section, please feel free to move me!!!
Koda's trainer said tonight that femur bones in the meat department are great for dogs! They chew out the marrow and then you can refill the middle where the marrow was with peanut butter, freeze it, and there you have it, a great attention occupier! Do NOT cook the bones!! That will cause them to splinter. They are also much cheaper in the meat department than at a pet store. Come Share Your Border Collies on Facebook at Border Collie Crazy Border Collie Crazy |

![]() ![]() ![]() All free from Local butchers. Be aware that you need the middle bit of the leg bone if you wish to do the above, we sometimes get the middle or sometimes the ends (the knuckle bits). Also be a bit careful with giving these to your dog if you have not before - a) they are very high value and your dog may resource guard them and b) they are quite rich and can cause upset tummies initially. RE: Femur Bones - Good for all dogs!
Great pics Tassle!!! We have to pay for the femurs I was talking about here :o(
Someone on my Border Collie Crazy Facebook page asked about dogs with peanut allergies. If you do have a dog with peanut allergies, there are many more "stuffing" alternatives. You could freeze yogurt in the femur after the marrow is chewed out and then let your dog have it. Anything you can think of! Kong also makes cans of different types of fillings like liver pastes, etc. but personally I read the ingredients can of that stuff and it's just not for me and my dog. RE: Femur Bones - Good for all dogs!
I feed my dogs raw, and so that includes bones, but I never give weight-bearing bones of large animals e.g cows, deer because they're too dense and the dogs will break their teeth on them (over time)
If the dog is just eating the filling and not gnawing on the bone then that's fine but I wouldn't take the chance |

RE: Femur Bones - Good for all dogs!
I know a few people who will not feed the weight bearing bones for the same reason. Mine have always had them and love them and so far (with all our dogs) they have been fine

RE: Femur Bones - Good for all dogs!
All my three LOVE bones, and as Hannah we can get them free from the butcher. The best part is the marrow. I normally help them out with the bits right at the bottom and get drooled all over.
Pate works well as well, stick it in the freezer and they enjoy that. Mum's new pup LOVES Marmite in hers (not much because of the salt content, but it keeps her quiet trying to lick it out). They are also great for the teeth according to my vet. He commented how good Shadow's teeth are for nearly 8 years old, so I told him they have loads of old bones and all three are constantly gnawing on them. Keeps their teeth clean and don't cost anything, unlike some dental chews I have seen! My three think it's the greatest treat in the world.
