RE: Extreme dog breeding
Wow....Absolutely revolting, angering, inappropriate and wrong.
How any of the distorted breeds have been made "prettier" is beyond me. And the people subscribing to this is ...well I have no appropriate adjectives to convey my opinion....It just goes to show what the almighty dollar (pound, if you will) has power over. Thank you for posting these. Obviously even "reputable breeders" can be very, very wrong. Tammy...with the polka dot bcs!

RE: Extreme dog breeding
Half way through the first documentary at the moment, truly shocking stuff.
So does the KC have any good points? :S I feel like I'd rather AVOID a kc registered pup now... ![]() |

RE: Extreme dog breeding
Yes - the KC does have good points and NO most GOOD KC breeders are NOT like this.
This is a Hugely biased one sided view of KC registered dogs and has caused a Massive increase in People charging huge amounts for mutts and crosses on the strength of Hybrid Vigour. (No pun intended) Yes there are some over exaggerated breeds and No (IMO) the KC does not do enough to combat this - this should not put anyone of researching - looking at heath tests and buying a pup who is registered with the KC - it is still your best bet at getting a healthier dog (as long as you look at more than just the registration). RE: Extreme dog breeding
I agree with Hannah, not all breeders are bad, however far too many of them are. You really have to do your research, unless you are involved in activities where you meet breed specific breeders. If you deal with "breed specific" breeders, they are less likely to be part of a puppy mill or backyard breeder.

RE: Extreme dog breeding
I think it has gotten to the point that it is more than just "breed standards". I think the individual buyer has to have their own standards as well. If practices do not agree with personal morals and ethics, then that is not the breeder for you....Me personally, if I knew that inbreeding was a practice, I would not enable the breeder by giving them my money. Just like lack of testing or too frequent of litters from their females. If I am going to spend money on a puppy it is going to be to a proven breeder with a moral breeding program that is to better the breed...and that isn't to eliminate genes by breeding a straight line.
So it falls onto the buyers. They have to be more intelligent, more resouceful and have higher standard of practices, IMO. It is research, amplified. Tammy...with the polka dot bcs!

RE: Extreme dog breeding
As I said, this put me off KC completely & I got Harvey (with no papers, just a pet dog).
I would however in future, get a KC dog but one that is bred well. I plan on getting a straight back, hip scored GSD. Katy Berwick ![]() "Whoever said you can't buy happiness forgot little puppies."- Gene Hill

For example - HD and Eye problems are rife in BCs (although there are more things you can test for) Good breeders will test for these things. What is unfortunate about BCs (in this country). There are 2 ways of registering a BC in this country, you can register with the ISDS or the KC. Before the KC recognised BCs the ISDS had been going a long time, and had almost sorted CEA out of the breed. They insist on testing and will not register a litter if at least one of the parents has not been tested clear. (Meaning that you can only get carriers in a litter at worst). The KC have never insisted on any health tests. Apparently due to the way it is run, they cannot. (I don't fully understand this). However - as much as I am quite anti KC, it should certainly not put people off buying a dog who is registered with them. As long as they realise it is not a guarantee of anything and that other checks should also be done. Hannah The only mistakes my dogs make are the ones I've taught them!
