Thumbs Up Disc Success
Well, after much frustration and doubt... Bailey is finally catching the disc in mid-air!

Well... not huge jumps yet, given his young age (8 months on 2/10), but he's chasing it down and nabbing it out of the air.

It took a lot of work on both of our parts... me learning how to teach that catching before it lands = good and him trying to figure that much out. I think a big factor was that I switched to a soft disc (rubber-like)... he also has some crazy speed that wasn't evident before, so that helps as well.

Anyway, yay for Bailey! I can tell he really likes it... of course, it could be due to the huge treat jackpot he gets if he catches it and brings it straight back. Wink

3 weeks until D-day...

RE: Disc Success
Good job Bailey!! Finn will catch it if you throw it relatively close to him but at a distance he's not there yet - just yesterday actually we're able to get him to start running before you throw the frisbee, so we're getting there...some day!! lol

Well, keep at it... worked for us.

To get him used to chasing the disc, I used the running start method for a long time. I just hold the disc while he runs next to me, then when I let it go, he goes after it.

Now, when he sees me throw it, he's after it right away. I think the increase in his acceleration has helped that aspect quite a bit. It's crazy how fast and powerful these guys are, it's like it came on overnight... lol.

RE: Disc Success
That is a brilliant idea!! lol although I feel as though he might tackle me if I go running with it but we can work on that!!

I find Finn doesn't go full speed after it either! and I know how fast he can go when he does run full speed!!

Are you going to get into disc doggin' when Bailey's old enough?

I won't be doing any disc competitions or anything, but I do want him to be a decent disc catcher. Just another thing I can do in the back yard to get some of that energy out of him... plus, I love throwing a disc around anyway.

RE: Disc Success
Way to go!!

A good tactic for getting your dog running and keeping an eye on the disc is to have him do an "around" behind you and then throw as he's in line with your body. This prevents the going out so far and then waiting. ^_^

RE: Disc Success
Yay, well done Bailey!, i just threw the frisbee for Holly and she fetched it, didn't take her long at all to start jumping in mid air and catching it, she will fetch anything though, so i guess she knew what to do with a frisbee!.

RE: Disc Success
Oh how cool!!! I had no clue there was a certain way to make it easier to learn to catch. I just watched a youtube video on one dog learning. I had no idea. I was just throwing it at Pobey and she was trying to catch it and she did one time. She only liked a certain frisbee b/c it was lighter weight but she tried right away. I'm going to look into more disc training.

RE: Disc Success
Thanks guys... another good session last night. Caught it every time I gave him a chance to, but he started stopping short and dropping it, so I just told him to get his frisbee and remembered to hold praise until he got all the way back. After about 10 - 15 minutes though, he lost focus and wanted to chew on the disc, so I took it from him for the night.

It's a work in progress... Smile

RE: Disc Success
oooooo you are going to get hooked like me. Important keep the disc clean!!!! this prevents teeth wearing down. Tor loves playing disc, I have to hide them in the house cus he comes with the disc saying he want to play more. He is off duty now got his toe hurt and has a blue nail, plus he limps going to the vet tomorrow.

Yeah... it's pretty amazing to watch the speed and accuracy.

Addicting is right, this is our favorite training exercise.
