RE: Crate or loose in 1 room while working
I doggy proofed the kitchen as i dont have room for a crate but Shadow (8 month) still manages to find something i forgot its like a quest trying to stay one step ahead
. I leave plenty of toys food and water so far we are upto 30 min before the howling starts, its a work in progress, My previous bc was quite content and well behaved in the house as long as we left a radio or tv on.

RE: Crate or loose in 1 room while working
My dogs are left to do there own thing most of the time, i have a baby gate to block the hallway off though so sometimes i shut that depends what day it is as Bella loves to run up the hallway and bark at the postman/paperboy, and she has broken a blind already and ripped the letterbox off, otherwise they are both good of course they have water to drink and they have there toys to play with if they want.

Silky stays in my room with the door closed, she stays in there most of the time anyhow.

I leave mine in their crates. They are both very well behaved in their crates.

RE: Crate or loose in 1 room while working
I have always left my dogs loose when alone in the house. One thing you can try is to leave the tv, radio or both on low volume when you go out. The background noise seems to help animals settle. Having said that, these things work for one and not for another, you have to try different things.

RE: Crate or loose in 1 room while working
We leave two crated and the old man Murph free to run the house. He mostly sleeps on the deck all day or by the fire in the winter. Lulu can stay out if its for short periods of time. but both bedrooms doors closed. She will get mad and pee on the beds. Jeb my girlfriends new pup is crated no matter what. He will get into anything and chew up anything. We left all three in the truck this weekend while cutting up fire wood and he chewed up my gear shifter and a hole in my seat

And his kong fully loaded his rope toys and other chew sticks are in the same room. I swear if i put him an empty sterile room he'd find something to chew ![]() Joanne

RE: Crate or loose in 1 room while working
House privileges must be earned. All my dogs start out crated and we leave them out for longer/shorter periods depending on their trustworthiness. Aspen (now 5) hasn't needed to be crated for a long time, and neither has Yukon (our 3 year old Siberian Husky) but Twig (almost 2) still is. She's really good in the house, and never chews anything but her toys, but she'll probably always be crated as she gets really snarky sometimes and I don't want to come home to find anyone with bald patches.
She does love her crate, though, and runs in to it in the morning when I'm getting ready to leave. She also voluntary sleeps in it in the evening when she wants to be left alone. |

RE: Crate or loose in 1 room while working
We have always kenneled our dogs if they are going to be home alone. That way we know nothing will happen in the house or to the dogs.

RE: Crate or loose in 1 room while working
Bailey was first crated when we got her, but she has severe anxiety in the crate. And she destroyed two crates, so now she is "gated" in the dinning room and is completely fine with this.
I think it really depends on the dog and there behavior and your comfort. My aunts dogs can not leave there dogs un-crated because they will eat things, like carpets, walls or socks. |

RE: Crate or loose in 1 room while working
You all are so great with the responses. I think I'm choosing crate for now because Tucker is fine in it and I want to protect him from himself.
