Catahoula Leopard Dogs
Now those are some cool dogs. If I was not a BC guy, I think a Catahoula would be cool. Anyone else have a fondness for them?

I've never seen a Catahoula in real life (they have not been in Australia for very long), but the photos look pretty cool. A bit like Koolie's, which are an awesome herding/working breed. My sister has just got a little blue male Koolie, he is so cuteSmile

A coolie or koolie (aka the German Koolie) is similar to the the USA breed - Australian Shepherd. It came over with the sheep and the Basque herders from the UK. The Aust. Shep may indeed have both Coolie and Smithfield Bob in it. They are a are barking working collie dog used primarily for domestic stock gathering and chute work. They come in merle and solid, often with blue eyes. They use little "eye" or style posture when herding.

A catahoula is more hound than herder. It is remincent of the old bulldog types (before they smashed in there faces and bred them into genetic cesspool). They bay up the stock and circle/hold them for the cowboys. Other people use them to hunt feral pigs. They are a tough as nails breed - hound hard headed and working dog driven. People who get them for pets often regret it immensely.

Re: Catahoula Leopard Dogs
I have 2 Aussihoulas (Catahoula/Aussie) they are awesome. I know alot of people that have them and pure breds there is a breeder near by. I have met some really good ones and have met some really bad ones. The sire to both of mine is a 120lb Catahoula named "Dirtbag" He has a head like a anvil and is mean as all get out. I had a pup named Gator that I gave to a friend of mine for her b-day, he now weighs 100lbs and is the sweetest, hardest working cow dog I know.

Re: Catahoula Leopard Dogs
I just got a Catahoula/Aussie mix, by chance at a shelter. He's a year old and really friendly. I named him "Pacey". He's a great runner, setting our tempo for over an hour on the first time out; he also seems to pace around the house and yard (at least for today). Lilly hasn't warmed up to him completely, but they are coexisting fairly well.

brandonkuala Wrote:Actually, leopard dogs are the only known domesticated native North American breed of dog who developed by our Native American Indians and early settlers. They kept pure to the present day by folks who use them to work livestock, hunt game ranging from squirrels to coons to bears, and as guard dogs. Itr is where the pure breed of this originated from.

Re: Catahoula Leopard Dogs
Maggie is an Australian Shepherd/Border Collie. Her mother was a tri color Aussie and her father was a black and white bc. Maggies brother Jake looks more like the tri color Aussie and Maggie looks more like a bc.

Beautiful dogs. Sounds like they are really rare. I don't recall ever seeing one myself.

RE: Catahoula Leopard Dogs
Pacey is still growing, larger than Lilly now, and more slender. His body slithers like a snake when he walks, and his teeth look sharp like a piranhas. He's always playful, and can jump vertically & backwards up to countertop level like a ninja.

Lilly's more agile on the ground and is the boss especially with toys. They will wrestle and play tug together, but she won't hesitate to run full speed into him if he catches her ball, so he usually veers off.

He has a great memory, recalling where every dog lives and where we cross streets on any random run course. He did okay in an off leash park and on the beach, not running away for long and coming back to me (he got out of the backyard once and was running back home before I could go after him).

He doesn't bark much but can shriek piercingly when excited, or have a deep woof when being protective.

He eats quite a bit and likes to chew on treats. Stuffed animals or any other kind of dog toy, including soccer balls, don't hold up long (apart from thick rubber or rope). He's slowly learning what objects are or aren't toys.

He prefers to be around people, and often follows whoever is on the move.
So maybe that's all characteristic of this breed...
