Teaching your Border Collie not to Jump Up -
When your dog is a
puppy it may be cute when they jump up to greet you
but it's important to teach them that this behavior
is not allowed early on. Once your dog is a lot
bigger it won't be so cute anymore.
1 . Be
consistent. It's counterproductive to
discourage your dog from jumping on others,
while allowing her to jump on you.
2. When you
first walk in the door, turn around. Wait
until your dog stops jumping, and say
"Good!" the moment they stop.
3. Command your
pup to sit if they know the command, and
don't touch him/her until they do. Again, be
consistent.
4. Tell your dog to find a toy if they don't
know "sit." This redirects their energy from
jumping on you to finding their toy.
5. Practice "no
jump" with friends once your dog learns not
to pounce on you. Have friends give treats
and praise when your dog succeeds.
6. Anticipate potential jumping situations,
and tell your dog to sit or redirect their
attention to something else.
7. Praise your dog when they don't jump..
Teaching your
Border Collie to Heel -
Teaching your Border
Collie to heel will help keep you and your dog safe
while going for walks. It will also teach your dog
not to pull during walks and to focus on you.
1. Have your dog
on your left side, facing the same direction
as you.
2. In your left
hand hold food in front of your dog's nose.
3. Give the
command "Heel" and begin walking, keeping
the treat in front of your left hip. It may
take several attempts to keep your dog
focused on the treat.
4. Say "Good" at
the exact time your dog walks as you walk.
5. Give your dog the treat and praise for
the slightest show of understanding.
6. Every time
you stop have your dog sit at your left side
and give them praise.
Training a Reliable Recall (Come) -
This is a
very important command for your Border
Collie to learn for obvious reasons.
1. Start out
with a short leash and progress to a longer
leash, and eventually off-leash as your dog
gets better with the command. Don't switch
until your dog has it down at each distance.
2. Have your
dog in the "sit" position and give the
"stay" command. Walk away from the dog. Turn
and wait a few seconds, repeating the "stay"
command if you feel you need to, then say
dog's name "Come". You may need to pat
your thigh when you give the command at
first.
3. When your
dog comes to you give them lots of praise
and have them sit. Give your dog more praise
and a treat for sitting.
4. Repeat for
5 minute sessions throughout the day.
